The European elections are a battle for the EU’s future, with the results informing not only the choice of Jean-Claude Juncker’s successor but the 751 MEPs who will wield considerable influence over the shaping of Brussels regulations for the next five years.
Under the Spitzenkandidat process, each of the pan-EU political alliances of like-minded national parties picks a lead candidate. The group with the most votes should have their Spitzenkandidat take the top job at the European Commission but the method, used only once before, is under fire.
These elections are also set to create a more fragmented and fractious European Parliament than at any other time in history.
