What’s it like to work in the marijuana industry? How do you start and grow a cannabis business? To address those questions and others related to a new set of rules on recreational pot, the city of Chicago is hosting a Cannabis Resource Fair early next month.

“We’re teaming up with experts representing all angles of this new industry to empower our residents who are either interested in learning more or becoming the next employee, business owner or investor in Chicago’s newest industry, with the resources they need to succeed,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a statement announcing the event.

City officials are partnering with cannabis businesses, industry experts, government agencies, legal aid organizations, advocacy groups and social equity leaders to host the free event Saturday, Feb. 1 at the University of Illinois at Chicago Forum (725 W. Roosevelt Road) from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

In addition to informational tables and workshops, the event includes panel discussions and presentations on topics such as expungement, jobs and how to navigate city cannabis regulations.

“Inclusion in this new industry has been at the heart of the state’s efforts from the beginning, and this first-ever city of Chicago cannabis resource fair will serve as a critical network for residents interested in job opportunities, investment pathways, and supports and services for this emerging market,” said Michael Negron, assistant director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, in a statement.

City staff will be on hand at the fair to answer questions and distribute information about the latest Chicago cannabis rules and regulations, including dispensary zoning regulations and Chicago Police Department’s reformed enforcement policies.
