Possible N.J. marijuana legalization is focus of special Oct. 27 forum with lawmakers, insiders and regulators – NJ.com
As the Garden State heads into this pivotal election more than just the presidency hangs in the balance — this year, voters will finally have the chance to say whether the state should legalize adult-use cannabis.
Polling continues to show strong support for legalization in New Jersey, but given the challenges of vote-by-mail and many voters unaware of referenda on the back of their ballots, nothing is certain. Still, if New Jersey does embrace legalization, the question of what it will look like will end up in the hands of legislators and regulators.
With this in mind, on Oct. 27 NJ Cannabis Insider will host “Countdown to Legalization” presented by Brach Eichler, a virtual forum focused on the challenges and opportunities awaiting legislators, regulators, entrepreneurs, patients and consumers if legalization finally becomes a reality. Sponsors supporting this event include, The Cerealia Group, Foley Hoag and The BGill Group. The two-hour program begins at 1 p.m. Reserve your tickets here.
State Sen. Nicholas Scutari, the state lawmaker who’s been advocating for the expansion of medical marijuana, legalization of adult-use cannabis and a force behind ensuring social justice prevails after the plant is legalized in the Garden State, will launch the program with prepared remarks and a Q&A with event host Justin Zaremba, NJ Cannabis Insider’s lead reporter.
The remainder of the program are discussions framed around what New Jersey could learn from states where recreational cannabis is already legal, and where the industry can go once the state adopts regulations to sell cannabis to adult consumers.
U.S. Sen. Cory Booker will provide a special message to attendees during the event. Other guest speakers include:
Jeff Brown, New Jersey’s chief medical cannabis regulator in his role as assistant commissioner in charge of the Department of Health’s Medicinal Marijuana Program.
Andrew Brisbo, executive director of the Michigan Marijuana Regulatory Agency, which oversees the state’s medical and recreational use cannabis programs.
Shawn Collins, executive director of the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission, which oversees the state’s cannabis programs.
Michael McQueeny, a counsel in Foley Hoag’s Cannabis practice, where he advises businesses, including investors, processors, distributors, retailers and cultivators, on the regulation of the cannabis and CBD industry, with a specific focus on New Jersey and New York. He’s also teaches Cannabis Law at the New York Law School.
Alixon Collazos, a public affairs specialist working with The BGill Group, a full service public affairs, political consulting and digital media firm. She recently worked with GTI-NJ to open Rise Paterson. An executive board member at the New Jersey Hispanic Research and Information Center, Collazos specializes in political affairs, community relations, and media outreach to the New Jersey Latino community.
Edmund DeVeaux, a policy advisor at the New Jersey CannaBusiness Association, the state’s first and largest cannabis trade organization, is an executive vice president at Burton Trent, a public affairs firm that operates throughout the Mid-Atlantic region
Charles Gormally, co-chair of Cannabis Law at Brach Eichler, a Roseland-based law firm which conducts the Brach Eichler Cannabis Poll. The firm is a leader in how to navigate the complex issues facing the industry including, banking and taxation; real estate and land use regulation; healthcare and medical testing; and industries including food production, farming, packaging, and tourism.
