- You should get high this afternoon, then come hang out, the organisers of an online cannabis event says.
- The Cannabis Vexpo has set up a “blazing room” for dagga smokers who may be missing the social element of cannabis use.
- The audio-centric system is built for large crowds who want to chat.
- You are also welcome to hang out even if you don’t want to toke up, the organisers say.

At 16:20 today – or 4:20, in the format associated with dagga culture – you should get high and come hang out with other cannabis users in a special online environment, the organisers of the Cannabis Vexpo say.
Previously the Cannabis Expo, the event is being held online over the next two days, in an attempt to replicate what had been intended to be a consumer-friendly set of lectures and exhibitions around marijuana cultivation, use, and associated products such as CBD oil.
The use of marijuana is limited to private spaces in South Africa, which meant that previous, physical incarnations of the event banned any form of dagga from the premises. But nothing stops online participants from smoking together.
“People use cannabis for various reasons, and many prefer to fly solo, while others certainly are missing the social element that has been restricted due to the pandemic and are looking forward to blazing up again with others,” expo director Silas Howarth told Business Insider SA.
Those with edibles or drops are also welcome, Howarth said, as are people who don’t want to get high.
The “blazing room” will be hosted in a High Fidelity audio environment, which promises online crowds the opportunity to mingle and chat much as they may have at physical events.
The system assigns avatars that can be walked around inside the space, changing who is in earshot.
The smoking room is accessible to anyone who registers for the virtual expo, free of charge.
