Virginia lawmakers Consent to Maneuver up marijuana legalization to summer 2021 – NBC News
Virginia legislators voted Wednesday to overthrow the nation’s bill to legalize marijuana, which makes ownership of the medication legal as soon as this summer.
The bill to legalize the purchase and amateur use of marijuana originally passed in February, but would not have been enacted until 2024. Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam urged lawmakers to amend the bill to proceed up the timeline of legalization, citing a need to correct the over policing of Black Virginians in ownership crimes.
“Now, Virginia can make history as the first nation in the South to legalize the simple possession of marijuanaand restore justice to people harmed by years of over criminalization,” Northam said Wednesday prior to the vote. “I recommend the General Assembly to embrace my alterations and make this happen.”
